God's Irrational Love, Romans 5:6-8,
- God loves you -- It's intense; unconditional; emotional (Jesus weeping over
Jerusalem and Lazarus' death); and irrational.
- God shouldn't love us -- we're "powerless," "ungodly," and "sinners." (:6,8)
- True love: I have no logically good reason to kind to you, but I will. The Bible
calls this God's "grace" or "mercy."
- Most of our "love" is kind selfishness: I'll show love to you, but what am I going
to get out of this? We want a logically "good" reason to show love.
- Matthew 5:46-47: If we love only those who do good to us, is that love?
- God does not base His love on what we can do for Him -- no matter if we're
rich or poor, beautiful or ugly, smart or dumb, successful or failing.
- Some philosophers have said that rationality is the highest virtue, but Jesus told
us that love id to be our greatest goal.
- God isn't dumb, but if he always did the most rational thing, He never would have
loved us.
- God loves us, but that doesn't mean He's pleased with everything we do.
- God loves us just as we are, but He loves us too much to let us stay that way.
Jesus forgave the adulterous woman; then said: "Go and sin no more."
:7- Would you pay bail for and evil criminal? Or take on their death penalty?
- Human love at its best might die for a good person, but God's love did die for
the worst person.
- God doesn't love us b/c we deserve it, but b/c we need help.
:8- Jesus "demonstrated" God's love to us while we were still sinners.
- Jesus' irrational love: w/Samaritan woman, a friend of "inners", (on the cross)
"Forgive them Father", saving man on the next cross, Luke 7:37-39.
- "How deep the Father's love for us" lyrics on other page.
- I don't know why God loves us so much, but His love makes me whole.
