Jesus' View on Divorce, Matthew 19:1-12;
- What was the first thing God said was not good in the Bible? Not the first sin,
but to be alone. (Genesis 2:18).
:5 - If God leads you to marriage, it is the most important human relationship.
- Why? You leave your parents to be married and "become one flesh."
:5 - "wife"-God's ideal in marriage is monogamy (not that you struggle w/it).
- If you marry, I encourage you to marry another Christian (II Cor. 6:14).
- God's intent is that when a relationship/intimacy is formed, it lasts forever(w/God
and people). A "mission marriage" isn't the best evangelism choice.
- Why preach on divorce to unmarried people? It's better to let you know the dangers
of divorce now before it's too late.
- Some say homosexuality is tearing at the sanctity of marriage. I think divorce got a
head start in the USA doing that.
- The Barna group found that American non-Christians and Christians had the same
rate for divorce: 35% (2004); Oklahoma - top 5 for divorce. CNN-1999.
:3 - "nay & every reason?" No. "Irreconcilable differences" don't count.
Only ground for divorce Jesus gave was if the spouse committed adultery (:9).
- Why not divorce? Hardens our hearts (:8) to people & maybe even God; it hurts
those involved; makes parents & kids less trusting in love. Divorce teaches you to
give up on people and problems. Kids do best w/both parents.
:10-11 - The disciples essentially asked, "If 'God hates divorce' (Mal. 2:16), why
endanger yourself by getting married?"
- God's called some people to be single for life. Marriage isn't God's ideal for every
person.
- If God leads you to be single (:12) or married, serve Him wholeheartedly.
:7-8 - If God leads you to marriage, He allows divorce occasionally but He never
desires it for anyone. God intends marriage to last a lifetime.
