Avoiding Legalism & Libertinism, Romans 5:20-6:7,
I- Your dad spanks you for disobeying him. Don't want to get spanked?
Obey him(law). You disobey but he spanks your perfect brother instead(grace).
-- OT view of having righteousness: law. NT view is: grace. If you only value
one of them, you risk bad extremes of legalism(law) or libertinism (grace).
- Legalism says, "As long as I do my best, God's pleased with me."
:20- God's law may cause us to sin less but it doesn't make us sinless.
- We can't perfectly obey God's laws; our disobedience(sin) separates us form
God; our inability to fully obey shows us our need for salvation from outside.
- Libertinism says, "If I can't keep all of God's laws, why should I even try?
I can do what ever I want b/c God will always forgive me (6:1)."
- Grace didn't finish off the law; Jesus fulfilled it by paying its consequences.
Matt, 5:17-- It's law & grace. God's grace empowers us to obey the law more
through the H.S.'s strength and forgives us for when we still fall short(:21).
:2- the eternal death consequence of sin no longer applies to those who accept
God's forgiveness (won't lose salvation). But the law's not dead; some consequences
for sin still exist (ex-prison).
:6- Past slave to sin; you can return to sin or be a slave to righteousness--"18.
:7- We're free from sin, not free to sin. We now have a choice w/sin.
- Sin always leads to death & Jesus died for our sin so get away from it.
- Motivations to flee sin: God hates sin; pursue God (that's why He saved us); sin
hurts our relationship w/Him (but not salvation; A& I are still married even if we
do wrong, but bad choices will hurt our relationship).
- We should obey God's law even though we 'll never do it perfectly. God's grace is
what we need for salvation, but Ge saved us so we'd be righteous.
- Kneel to pray-- humility b/f God is foolishness to world (4/17 sermon).
