Hosea 13:1- 6 -- Defeating complacent Christianity
- What satisfies you? The burn from exercising, hard work completed,
time w/old friends or family
- What most fulfills you? Serving people (i.e. homeless shelter), worshipping God
1. Satisfaction – Always requires pursuit.
I- Soccer champs: hard practice, travel, time.
I- Eating fish I caught vs. freezer fish sticks
- You pursue what you think will satisfy.
- Wealth, health, & fame are fleeting (Liz Taylor) (:3)
- W/o Christ you may be satisfied, but not fulfilled.
- God offers fulfillment, but we must pursue it.
Jer.29:13 – God fulfills us when we seek w/whole heart.
2. Complacency – When satisfied, but not pursuing.
:4 – God gave manna from heaven & water from rock.
:6 – Israel stopped pursuing God & forgot him.
I- Lions in zoo would die in wild; only fed
I- Too much salt tastes bad; Christian mints?
- How to defeat complacent Christianity:
* Keep eating (How much time w/God yesterday?)
* Keep deeding others (Dead Sea has no outlet).
* Obey & go where salt is needed.
* Don’t hope in what the world pursues; (!= fulfill).
(:4—Acknowledge God as only savior)
* Be humble & thankful for God’s fulfillment.
* (:6—Not proud –“The first thing people forget when they’re successful is God.”)
* Don’t be satisfied with your level of satisfaction in Christ. Keep pursuing God.
