How can the love of God be in us?

:16 Jesus- our example & empowerment for love.
He didn't give $ or pithy words; He gave his life.
Jesus didn't just give to people; he sacrificed.
How rich can you be & still sacrificially give?
:17- God doesn't want us to "pity" the poor, but provide.
- Excuse of not giving to the poor: won't use $ for need.
Jesus still died knowing some wouldn't apply him for need.
- Don't just provide for only you & your family.
James 1:27- How do orphans survive if people only help family?

:17B- If you have no compassion for others' needs,
you're not saved (3:19A, 2:9, 3:10, 3:14, 4:8, 4:20)
:18- Saying "I'm sorry" or "I'll pray for you" to a starving person is not love.
- Most important commandments; love for God & a love for people are inseparable
commands.
- Love is verb, not a noun; must have action.
- Jesus has shown us how to love people; He's called us to love others similarly;
& he's empowered us to love by the holy spirit.
